Break the yard into sections you can measure individually as rectangles or triangles, then add them together. For a triangle, the formula is (base × height) ÷ 2. A pie-shaped front yard can be split into two triangles or a triangle plus a rectangle. Sketch it out on paper, label each section, do the math separately, and sum the sections.
Using Google Maps Satellite View
Google Maps satellite view with the measuring tool (right-click on the map, select “Measure distance,” then trace a polygon around your turf areas) gives a surprisingly good estimate. It’s not perfectly precise — imagery resolution varies and it’s easy to mis-click — but it’s far better than using your lot size. This method works especially well for tracing around oddly shaped beds and driveways without walking every foot of the property yourself.
